Kansas Church Will Have to Pay Taxes on State Senate Candidate?s Home
Remember Wichita City Council member and state Senate candidate Michael O?Donnell?

He?s the guy who said he was living in and paying rent for a house owned by a church (where his father preaches). But the church, as a tax-exempt institution, wasn?t paying taxes on that property? something you?re only allowed to do if a pastor?s living on the property.
That?s a serious problem. And the FFRF alerted the Sedgwick County Appraiser?s Office as soon as they found out.
Now, there?s been a happy resolution to the issue:
The home of Wichita City Council member and state Senate candidate Michael O?Donnell is going back on the tax rolls and his father?s church will get a bill for back taxes through 2010, the Sedgwick County Appraiser?s Office has ruled.
The Rev. Michael O?Donnell, pastor of Grace and father of the council member, said the church will refile a tax exemption request to the Kansas State Board of Tax Appeals, essentially appealing the appraiser?s ruling.
?
?We apologize that this situation has brought undo negative publicity to Councilman O?Donnell as he has more than met the requirements for his living in the home,? his father said. ?We look forward to appearing before the Kansas State Board of Tax appeals and presenting our situation.?
His son said the issue shouldn?t negatively affect the Kansas Senate bid.
?It started out as a political agenda from the Wisconsin atheists,? council member O?Donnell said. ?Nothing has changed with this issue being between the church and the county.?
[FFRF attorney Patrick] Elliott chuckled at the accusation.
?We?re an apolitical group, a nonprofit that does not get involved in elections or campaigns,? he said, ?but we are concerned about state-church issues, including churches abusing tax privileges, which was the case here.?
You would?ve thought the Christian pastor would have been quicker to remedy the situation instead of placing blame on others. It?s almost as if religion doesn?t make you an honest person? huh. Shocking.
Good thing the atheist group was ready to do the right thing when the Christians were trying to hide from the law.

*They seal off the school grounds and a large battle between the Ovu and their summoned Shari, and The Staff and students of Stella Luna

Canton takes blame for Olympia loss | Football

There was no fear of going into overtime. And no plan to trick anyone.
Olympia coach Bill Beattie said the successful two-point conversion that ultimately was the difference for his team during Friday night?s 15-14 win at South Kitsap in Class 4A Narrows League play was all about his kicker?s concussion.
?That wasn?t me rolling the dice,? Beattie said.
The play continued the Bears? mastery over the Wolves (3-2 overall, 1-2 league) since the teams began playing on an annual basis in 2007. Olympia (2-3, 2-0) has won five of those six meetings, including all three at Joe Knowles Stadium.
That occurred in spite of South never trailing until midway through the final quarter. After a 1-yard run by Michael Fettig, Beattie called reinserted senior Michael Naipo, who started the game at quarterback despite being listed at wide receiver. Naipo runs the wildcat at that position, but added a tweak ? the play-action fake. He found senior tight end Tanner Hartsoch open over the middle for a 39-yard touchdown.
It was a play Beattie waited for the fourth quarter to call.
?We?ve kind of been working on that, holding onto it,? he said. ?We thought, ?It?s now or never.? We knew at some point, we were going to throw that pass.?
Beattie said he normally would have relied on injured junior kicker Randy Jones, but he felt more comfortable going for two than trying his backup. Sophomore quarterback Kaden Wilson returned and connected with Hartsoch to give the Bears their first lead with 7:07 remaining.
That left the mistake-prone Wolves ? they committed 10 penalties ? two more opportunities. Their first drive after Olympia?s score resulted in a three-and-out.
But South forced the Bears to punt on their ensuing possession and took over at Olympia?s 49-yard line with 3:29 left. Buoyed by a facemask penalty and a 17-yard pass from senior quarterback Kevin Whatley to classmate Bryce Broome, the Wolves had a first-and-10 at the Bears? 19. But three plays later, South coach Eric Canton called for a trick play ? a halfback pass by senior Adam Gascoyne ? on second-and-15. Naipo intercepted it to secure the Bears? victory.
?That?s my fault,? Canton said. ?Got out-coached by a million miles. That?s what you can put down. I?m not throwing these kids under the bus.
?Obviously, we?re not prepared. We were flat all week at practice.?
Canton said he was not sure if that was the result of last week?s 31-12 loss at Bellarmine Prep.
?It?s my job to get them ready,? he said. ?Clearly, we?re not.?
Sophomore running back Marshaud DeWalt, who helped South capitalize on a third-quarter interception by Broome when he scored on a 1-yard run, said he thought his teammates struggled to overcome their previous setback.
?I think last week might have hung over,? he said. ?We should?ve bounced back. We have to make sure we?re focused at all times.?
With the possible exception of the Wolves second drive ? where senior running back Li?I Kalima culminated a 14-play series with a 5-yard touchdown run ? that never occurred. Even that possession included a pair of penalties.
Hartsoch?s touchdown was the only offensive score for Olympia. Their second-quarter touchdown occurred after South took over at its own 6 where Whatley was hit and fumbled, which was recovered by Jones in the end zone. The teams went into halftime tied at 7.
But the intermission did little to help the Wolves, who committed three turnovers during the game, and now find themselves outside of the league?s playoff picture for the first time since 4A Narrows play began. South, which plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Yelm (3-2, 1-1), fell to fifth place with the loss. The league receives four playoff berths.
?There shouldn?t be any problem getting ready to go,? said Canton, when asked how his players can respond to consecutive losses. ?If they?re competitors, they?ll get ready to go on their own, because I obviously can?t get it done.?

Whale of a Tale: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Arctic Adventure
The surgeon aboard the whaling vessel Hope was often covered in the blood of seals and other animals, his clothes frozen enough that he'd have to stand next to the ship's stove to thaw before undressing.
A first-time sailor, he wasn't supposed to take part in the clubbing of seals, but he did, and repeatedly fell into the frigid waters, nearly freezing to death.
A journal by the young man, written at age 20 in 1880, was published yesterday. ?The ?author? ?Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Best known for creating the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes, Doyle was first a surgeon, and went along on the whaling ship after a friend of his backed out, according to a review of the book by the Daily Mail.
The journey was intense and bloody, and the sailors' job was to take as many seals and whales as possible. As noted by the Smithsonian, though, Doyle's journal of the trip isn't all blood and gore, and contains Doyle's neat prose and lovely illustrations of the ship and the terrain it explored in the Arctic Ocean. ?
The killing of whales was common at the time, although Doyle did write about his feelings of sympathy for the hunted animals. He also describes the beauty of the icy landscape and awe he felt upon seeing enormous humpback whales, which the sailors didn't hunt because they contained too little oil to make their capture worthwhile. Whale oil was valuable for its use in lamps, candle wax and other applications.
Doyle wrote about his experience in both fiction and nonfiction, which helped him first catch the eye of publishers. Although he completed medical school and briefly practiced as a surgeon, he soon realized his true talent lay in writing.
The account of his Arctic voyage is called "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (British Library Publishing, 2012) and is available from the British Library Shop.

On Monday night, he wore the white hat as the referee of the crew that bungled the Seahawks-Packers game.? On Friday night, Elliott worked a high school football game.
In the interim, Elliott says his phone has been ringing with calls from angry fans, telling him he should ?commit suicide? and that he ?should die.?
But he still believes it was the right call.
?The replay guy just said there is nothing here that we can use to overturn it. It?s going to stand,? Elliott told FOX7 in Austin.? (This confirm that, when it came to replay reviews during the lockout, non-replacement replay officials were actually usurping the authority of the on-field referees.)
As we recently explained, via the NFL?s rulebook and casebook, there was enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field, because Packers safety M.D. Jennings had ?control? of the ball before Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, which is the key factor regardless of what happens as they land on the ground and wrestle for the ball.? (Sorry, Seahawks truthers, but that?s the truth.)
Elliott also said he has ?no regrets? about accepting the assignment as a replacement, and that it was ?the most fun I?ve ever had.?
It was the most fun he?s had because he has been working as an official at the lower levels of the sport since 1978.? The fact that he hadn?t risen to the NFL or to a high-end college conference in the past 34 years tells us all we need to know about his overall skills.? As we?ve said time and again, if the replacements were among the best of the best, they would have been among those who were locked out.
Elliott declined to apologize to the fans of the Packers, explaining that if the call had gone the other way people would be asking if he should apologize to the Seahawks fans.
Scheduled to work the Vikings-Lions game in Week Four, Elliott said he wanted to ?get the bad taste out of his mouth? from Monday night?s game ? you know, the one for which he has nothing about which to apologize.

NASA's Curiosity rover finds ancient streambed on Mars, evidence of 'vigorous' water flow
Curiosity may have spent a while limbering up for the mission ahead, but now it's found evidence of an ancient streambed on Mars that once had "vigorous" water flow. Photos of two rock outcroppings taken by the rover's mast camera between the north rim of Gale Crater and the foot of Mount Sharp reveal gravel embedded into a layer of conglomerate rock. The shape of the small stones indicate to NASA JPL scientists that they were previously moved, and their size (think from grains of sand to golf balls) are a telltale sign that water did the work instead of wind. Evidence of H2O on Mars has been spotted before, but this is the first direct look at the composition of riverbeds NASA has observed from above.
According to Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich, it's estimated that water flowed at the site anywhere from thousands to millions of years ago, moved at a clip of roughly 3 feet per second and was somewhere between ankle and hip deep. "A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

When it comes to pricing insurance, it's best to match risk and reward, and the only way to match risk with reward is by using information about past behavior. Insurance markets fail when that information is not forthcoming. Or when it is deliberately withheld, as it currently is in California, thanks to Proposition 103, passed in 1988.
Under California law, drivers who follow the rules and carry car insurance earn a discount after five years of continuous coverage. But if they decide to switch insurance carriers, or drop coverage because of illness or because they were serving in the military, they lose that discount.
Prop. 33 on the Nov. 6 ballot allows consumers to keep their "continuous-driver" discount if they switch insurers. Drivers also would keep a persistency discount if their coverage lapses because of military service or unemployment of at least 18 months.
In a perfect world, insurers would be able to create whatever rating models they wished and would be free to compete for customers. California's Insurance Commission, however, allows insurers to write policies based solely on 18 criteria. Prop. 33 would add another criteria ? continuous driver history ? and that would likely go a long way to lowering car insurance rates, as has been found in the 48 other states that allow continuous-driver discounts.
The reason a continuous-driver discount winds up reducing, rather than boosting, insurance prices is evident when you consider two hypothetical drivers. The first driver's insurance history is transparent to every insurer, including competitors, while the second driver has no checkable history. Which driver would be riskier for to an insurer?
The answer to that question is obvious, but it isn't so obvious to state officials or activists. Though the state requires the purchase of automobile insurance, and although the state already has an insurance program for drivers unable to afford insurance, the poor (or infrequent drivers) sometimes allow coverage to lapse, which imposes that cost on everyone, which, of course, means higher premiums. Some 85 percent of Californians carry auto insurance; some 15 percent do not.
This lack of insurance is, in large measure, due to the higher costs imposed on consumers by the regulation of the insurance industry by self-styled "consumer watchdog" advocates, like Harvey Rosenfield, a prot?g? of Ralph Nader and former lobbyist for Nader's Congress Watch. In 1988, Mr. Rosenfield authored Prop. 103, which lowered auto insurance rates and required rate increases be approved by the state Department of Insurance.
Mr. Rosenfield has engaged in a dubious campaign to stop Prop. 33, much as he did in 1988 when he notably attempted to deliver a truckload of cow manure to State Farm Insurance Co.'s Los Angeles headquarters because "that's how consumers felt" about their insurance rates. He calls George Joseph, the billionaire founder of Mercury Insurance Group and funder of Prop. 33, a "Grinch" who will steal "Christmas."
Mr. Rosenfield's group attacked Prop. 33's backers for mentioning how it is supported by many military personnel, even though his group did the same thing during a previous initiative campaign.
Mr. Rosenfield said in a 2011 story for the Los Angeles Times that he was preparing a new ballot initiative to regulate health insurance rates in California.
As Rosenfield once told the Los Angeles Times, "You can't make some compromises when you are a consumer advocate." Insurance requires a balanced approach, divorced from politics. We recommend a Yes vote on Prop. 33.

A recent study by the Anti-Phishing Working group found that many companies do not have adequate website security.
"Victims are not taking measures to secure their sites from attack, and they remain lax in monitoring against and mitigating attacks," said ICANN's Dave Piscitello.

Identify security threats
There are six types of common cyber threats, according to Technology Snip: malware, spyware, Trojans, viruses and worms. They all use different strategies to target different types of data, so it is important for companies to identify what information is most valuable and vulnerable to an attack.
Companies should then determine the level of data protection that would be adequate. If it feels everything in its server is sensitive information (a bank, for instance, would want to protect all of its data), then it may need to use a more powerful antivirus system. There are also programs aimed at specific problems. A Trojan Horse, according to the news source, tries to steal specific information, so companies worried about data protection can download programs designed to fight that threat.
Cloud-based programs
AnchoFree CEO David Gorodyansky blogged for Inc.com about how the cloud is affecting cyber security. He said companies need to consider what applications are available online from anywhere, and whether employees are using personal devices - which tend to be less protected - to access those programs. Gorodynansky cautioned companies against making programs with highly important data accessible outside the office.

What is more delicious than warm chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven? Not much I tell ya, not much. We all should have a reliable, delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe in our back pocket to wow impromptu guests and convince our kids that we are, indeed, super mom.
Trouble is most cookie recipes begin with ingredients that need..well.. pimping! I encourage you to push beyond your baking comfort zone to try this nutrient dense, crazy delicious treat. The ingredients here should easily be added to your arsenal of real food, health promoting pantry staples.
So let?s pimp that recipe!
As we move toward a whole food diet, white flour and white sugar have to be replaced. White flour is a heavily processed ingredient that will promote blood sugar spikes and dips and increase your body?s propensity toward processed food cravings. In this recipe it is replaced with almond flour. Almond flour is a staple ingredient in my kitchen. It may sound fancy but it is nothing more then ground almonds (you can make your own by grinding almonds in a food processor, just don?t over process or you will end up with almond butter.)
Almonds, as you may already know, are potent nuggets of nutrients, protein, and healthy fat. Studies have shown that eating almonds actually helps your body decrease cravings and eat LESS at the next meal. Almond flour also happens to be gluten free (convenient for those of you living a gluten free lifestyle). From a culinary perspective almond flour has a very different mouth feel than white flour, so I like to mix it with another flour. My pick for this recipe is oat flour, which is nothing more than ground oats. I love the nutty flavor. I make my own at home by throwing rolled oats (which should be a staple in your pantry) into a blender, spice grinder or coffee grinder and whirling away until they are pulsed into a flour.
The next cookie culprit: white sugar, the ultimate empty food. As a matter of fact, white sugar could be called a depletion food. When you eat white sugar, which is stripped of all nutrients and minerals, your body has to pull from its own reserve to process it. Depletion indeed.
Sugar ?substitutes? are a much debated topic in the nutrition world. There seems to be a new miracle sweetener on the market each year and after its 15 minutes of fame comes a flood of reports on all that is wrong and evil about said sweetener (agave nectar is the perfect example).
In an effort to condense a very complicated topic my thoughts are as follows: reduce white sugar, NEVER use chemically derived sweeteners (you know, those little colored packets), and opt for minimally processed sweeteners that potentially have added health benefits. This brings me to my current favorite ? Coconut Palm Sugar, which is high in nutrients like potassium, low on the glycemic index (hello! no blood sugar spike here!) AND super, duper high in flavor. Coconut palm sugar lends a rich molasses-ey note, exactly what these cookies need.
As for fat, this part is of great interest to me and I hope you, dear reader, will digest this above all. Fat is typically seen as the big culprit in recipes and the first thing that is removed or replaced, BUT fat is essential if for no other reason than this: If there is healthy fat in a baked good you will feel more satiated and EAT LESS. Reducing fat is fine; eliminating it in a baked good, in my opinion, is not. That?s why I used coconut oil in this recipe. I think it?s the perfect luscious compliment and a wonderfully healthy option.
So here it is, a chocolate chip cookie to add to your arsenal of recipes. Be prepared if you bring these to a party, you will forever be asked to bring them to EVERY party. They are that good.

Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups almond flour
- 1/2 cup oat flour
- 1/4 cup applesauce
- 1/2 cup coconut palm sugar
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. In a large bowl combine coconut oil, palm sugar, applesauce, and vanilla. Using a wooden spoon to ?cream? together until well combined.
3. In a medium bowl combine flours, baking soda, and salt.
4. Combine dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Stir well.
5. Add chocolate chips; stir well to combine. The batter will seem a bit dry, this is OK.
6. Using a tablespoon or small cookie scoop drop batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Alternatively, form the dough into 1/2 inch balls.
7. Press the dough down to achieve flat cookies. This dough will not spread out like a traditional cookie dough. The thickness of the cookie placed in the oven will be nearly identical to the finished product.
8. Bake for 12 minutes.
9. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before eating.
NUTRITION
For you number crunchers? this serving size is 2 cookies, the protein is a bit higher, and the calories are a snip less then a standard cookie. But the real ?pimping? benefit is the added micro-nutrients that will leave you satisfied and satiated. This, above all other elements, is the fundamental difference between this pimped recipe and your run-of-the-mill processed baked good.

Apple CEO apologizes for Maps flaws, recommends rivals
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook apologized Friday to customers frustrated with glaring errors in its new Maps service and, in an unusual move for the consumer giant, directed them to rival services such as Google Inc's Maps instead.
The rare apology follows Apple's launch of its own mapping service earlier this month, when it began selling the iPhone 5 and rolled out iOS 6, the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform.
Users complained that the new Maps service - based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom NV's data - contained geographical errors and gaps in information, and that it lacked features that made Google Maps so popular from public transit directions to traffic data and street-view pictures.
"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook said in a letter to customers released on its website, adding that the company "fell short" of its commitment to deliver "the best experience possible to our customers."
Unusually, he suggested that customers download rival mapping services available in Apple's App Store while the company improves the product.
"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," he said in the letter.
Apple is typically loathe to tout rival services and the contrite apology by Cook is an indication of how Apple is changing under the chief executive who took over last year from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death. It also took the additional step of prominently displaying the rival services on its Apps Store.
"It is a bit unusual but at the same time, Tim is keeping Apple's commitment to provide the best user experience for customers," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said. "A key reason for Apple's success is keeping customers happy so we think this is a good move."
"People forget that Google Maps started out inferior to Mapquest and Yahoo Maps," he added.
Apple's home-grown Maps feature -- stitched together by acquiring mapping companies and data from many providers including Waze, Intermap, DigitalGlobe and Urban Mapping -- was introduced with much fanfare in June by software chief Scott Forstall. It was billed as one of the key highlights of the updated iOS6 software.
But errors and omissions in the maps service quickly emerged after the software was rolled out, ranging from misplaced buildings and mislabelled cities to duplicated geographical features.
NEW APPLE
The last time Apple faced such widespread criticism was in 2010, when users complained of signal reception issues on the then-new iPhone 4 model.
A defiant Jobs at the time rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed, but offered consumers free phone cases at a rare, 90-minute press conference called to address those complaints.
While Apple fixed the issue, Jobs had apologized to users only after he was specifically asked if he was sorry. He also said the issue was shared by all the major manufacturers, naming rivals Research in Motion, Samsung Electronics and HTC Corp.
Cook himself played a key role in convincing Jobs to tackle the negative publicity that arose around that issue, something he was initially reluctant to do, according to his biographer.
"Finally Tim Cook was able to shake him out of his lethargy," Walter Isaacson said in his biography on the late Silicon Valley icon. "He quoted someone as saying that Apple was becoming the new Microsoft, complacent and arrogant. The next day Jobs changed his attitude."
It remains to be seen how fast Apple can fix the mapping glitches. Jobs had been in a similar position when he allowed email synchronization software MobileMe to launch in 2008, to deadly reviews. The mercurial CEO took the group to task for it and replaced the group's head. The service is now folded into the iCloud product.
Mapping is a complex process that takes a lot of resources and years to perfect, said Marcus Thielking, co-founder of Skobbler, maker of the popular GPS Navigation 2 app, built using the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap platform.
"It helps a lot if you have great data to start with," he said, adding that it appears that different database were thrown together in building Apple Maps. "They (Apple) can offer incremental updates and that's what they will do."
Cook said that more than 100 million iOS devices are using the new Apple Maps and that the more people use Maps, the better it will get. He also offered some hints on why the company decided to remove Google Maps.
Apple launched the Google-powered Maps "initially with the first version of iOS" and created a home-grown version of the service as it wanted to provide more features, Cook said.
"As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps," he said in the letter.
Google provides turn-by-turn navigation on Android-based devices but the popular feature was not available for Apple devices. Apple Maps replaced Google Maps in iOS 6 and the Google service is now only available through a browser.
Shares of Apple fell 2 percent to close at $667.10 on Nasdaq.

US immigration chief: Same-sex ties are family ties

Same-sex couples will be considered ?family relationships? in immigration proceedings, according to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a move that could help stem the deportation of those in gay or lesbian binational relationships.
Close family ties to the United States are a factor considered by authorities in deportation cases, and gay and lesbian advocates have long argued for same-sex couples to have the same immigration rights as opposite-sex couples.
?In an effort to make clear the definition of the phrase ?family relationships,? I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase ?family relationships? includes long-term, same-sex partners,? Napolitano said in a letter.
Eight-four members of Congress signed a joint letter to Napolitano on July 31 asking for her to put into writing an order to prevent the deportation and separation of immigrants from their American citizen same-sex partners.
?One of those who penned the letter, U.S. Congressman Michael Honda of California, said Napolitano?s response, which he received Thursday night, heralded ?promising news.?
?In the wake of this important victory, we must take a step forward and continue the fight for immigration reform. Current immigration laws are tearing families apart and separating American citizens from their loves ones,? he said in a statement.??No one should have to choose between their spouse and their country, and no family should be left out of the immigration system.?

The Administration?s written guidance will help families facing separation and the field officers who are reviewing their cases,? she said in a statement.
Tiven was referring to the prosecutorial discretion laid out in June 2011, when ICE Director John Morton issued a memo requiring staff? to consider the circumstances presented in individual deportation cases, such as whether the person has close family ties to the U.S.
