China says HIV/AIDS cases up, premier-in-waiting promises help

BEIJING (Reuters) - The number of new HIV/AIDS cases in China jumped in the first 10 months of the year, as premier-in-waiting Li Keqiang promised to let non-governmental groups play a bigger role in fighting an epidemic spreading fast in vulnerable groups.

The number of new AIDS cases rose almost 13 percent in the January to October period, compared with the same period the previous year, while the number of people infected with HIV aged 50 and above leapt more than 20 percent, the official Xinhua news agency said.

A total of 492,191 people were living with HIV/AIDS as of the end of October, including 68,802 new cases this year, the news agency said, citing the Health Ministry.

Of new HIV cases within the 10 month period, 84.9 percent contracted the virus through sexual intercourse, with transmission rates amongst men-who-have-sex-with-men rising sharply, it added.

Li, at a meeting with non-governmental groups working on HIV/AIDS, said the government would let them play a more active role in battling the disease.

"You have a greater understanding of what sufferers want ... the government will continue to offer support and pay even greater attention to and listen more closely to the voices of civil society groups and you will be given greater space to play your role," state television cited him as saying.

It also showed pictures of Li shaking hands with sufferers, in a country where discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS is rampant, even in the health-care community.

China's government was initially slow to acknowledge the problem of HIV/AIDS in the 1990s and had sought to cover it up when hundreds of thousands of impoverished farmers in rural Henan province became infected through botched blood-selling schemes.

Li, who takes over from Wen Jiabao as premier at the annual meeting of parliament in March, worked in Henan from 1998 to 2004, and was criticized by activists for helping to cover up the extent of the crisis there.

Beijing has since stepped up the fight, spending more on prevention programs, launching schemes to give universal access to anti-retroviral drugs to contain the disease, and introducing policies to curb discrimination.

But in a country where taboos surrounding sex remain strong and discussion of the topic is largely limited, people with HIV/AIDS say they are often stigmatized, and activists frequently complain of official harassment.

Love Of Family & Home: Hallway Bathroom Makeover Reveal

Hey Friends!!

I'm so excited to share our new & improved hallway bathroom!?

Come on in....

Well, what do you think?!

One of the first things that I hope you notice in this space is the beadboard wallpaper!! I say that because I'm kinda in LOVE with it!! It was so easy to put up & it seriously looks like the real thing people! I shared a tutorial the beadboard wallpaper & gave my two cents on the quality, etc. in this post in case any of you are interested!

The other thing that you may notice right off the bat is that I changed the wall color! I decided since this was a "makeover", that I might as well switch things up a bit. I'm kind of a go big or go home when it comes to my makeovers, and to be honest, even though the aqua color was pretty....I was kind of over it! I was ready to brightened up this space! I decided to paint the walls "Turtle Dove" by Dutch Boy Paints. I think it works beautifully in this small bathroom!

I told you when this makeover started, that I planned on sticking with the "beachy" theme that I already had going on in this space. You can see from the picture above that I stuck with my plan! :) Yay!!?I just adore all of the accessories in this room & wasn't ready to part with them just yet. I think the beadboard wallpaper & the new wall color brings new life to the accessories....and that folks makes me (and my bank account) happy!

This "Beach" sign was a new addition to the room & something that I made myself. I shared the tutorial on the blog last week. In case you missed it, you can view that post HERE. I just love the way it turned out & because I decided to change the wall color, I needed a big pop of aqua on this wall! I think this sign definitely delivered!!

I feel like I should stop talking & just let you look around.....you okay with that?!

The shells in the apothecary jar above are from our family vacation to Destin, FL a couple years back. I just added little sand to the bottom & filled the jar with the little memoirs from our trip! I love that I have a place to display them!

You can get a pretty good look at our new flooring in the picture below! We went from cheap & failing peel & stick tile to a nice, sturdy, & beautiful ceramic tile from Lowes. You can read more about the flooring HERE.

The little boxwood in the white pot is from IKEA, the shell on the pedestal (I think) is from Kohl's & the "Pool & Cabanas" sign was something I found at Kirklands years ago! That little sign is one of my favorite things in this room!?

This little storage cabinet you see below was purchased at Target a few years back. The drawer has a beadboard front which goes perfectly with the room. This cabinet has definitely come in handy since there isn't a lot of storage space in the bathroom.?

These two pictures were purchased at Kohl's a few years back. They go great with our beach theme & again, add some color to the now, neutral walls.?

The shower curtain & the rug in front of the vanity are both from Target. Again, I purchased them a few years ago, so I'm not sure if they are still available!

If you've been following along with this makeover, then you know that behind that shower curtain also lies a new shower surround that we installed.

We had some really old ceramic tile on the wall surrounding the bathtub. A lot of the tiles were starting to fall off....the shower wasn't even usable! The new shower surround was easy to install, it was inexpensive & it looks great! To read more about our shower makeover click HERE.

Here is a closer look at the beadboard wallpaper & the chairrail that we added. Doesn't the wallpaper look like real beadboard?!

Rather than going with a traditional chairrail, we decided to use two pieces of MDF to make our own chairrail. The bottom board is 1x4 and the board on top that creates the ledge is a 1x2. The total cost for the chairrail was right at $30.00.

And one more "full" view of the room....kinda hard to get because of the layout!

And just because we all like a good before & after.....

Much brighter...wouldn't you agree?!

4 Skills It Takes To Make Your Marriage Thrive | World of Psychology

Many women and men dismiss bits of information about their partner that turn out to be warning signs for future trouble. These subtle feelings are actually your gut telling you to pay attention to something.

During the early phase of marriage, most people want to see the good in their spouse. Overall, I think this is a good strategy. However, it is also important and healthy to be able to trust your gut when you feel there is a problem in your relationship and address it with your spouse.

Trusting your gut involves some basic skills, so let?s look at four tips that may help improve the chances of your marriage thriving.

1. Awareness of your body sensations ? What is your gut telling you?

This involves paying attention to your heartbeat rate, pain in your heart, tightness in your chest, weight on your shoulders, intestinal distress and other sensations as indicators to pay attention to your feelings.

For example, early in my marriage, I overlooked my gut feelings. I did not have words for them. My husband would talk a lot, tell stories and generally be entertaining. This is a great quality about him; anyone would say he is a great story teller. At the time, I saw his story telling as a positive since I was relieved from my responsibility to communicate, due to my shyness and insecurity. I actually pushed my body sensations aside and did not pay attention to them.

It worked for me at the time. However over time, my body sensations began to emerge as tightness in my throat, pressure in my chest and pain in my heart. I knew then there was something wrong. I then had to find words for the bodily sensations I felt. I developed a deep resentment towards him and didn?t know why.

2. Vocabulary to identify subtle feelings.

Once you have identified your bodily sensation, you can begin to identify the feeling associated with it. Most people will identify with feelings of sad, mad or glad. But there are deeper feelings which fuel these basic catagories of feelings. Some of these deeper feelings can be fear of rejection, fear of loneliness or fear of abandonment.

I had to learn to accept my sad and mad feelings. Then after digging deeper, I found that I felt cast aside, rejected and abandoned by my husband when he told his stories. He would be the center of attention and I would be in a pity party with myself.

3. Courage to communicate your feelings to your partner.

Talking about deep feelings is a courageous act. When we risk exposing ourselves in a deep way we risk being hurt by the other person. Ultimately we have to decide if it is worth the risk of being exposed and connected fully and authentically with another person. Hiding parts of who we are out of fear leaves us disconnected and not really known.

Once I identified my deep feelings, I had to take responsibility for myself and be more assertive. I needed to communicate and share who I was with my husband and with other people. I knew that if I wanted to be known by him I had to be willing to work through any reaction he might display. I had to have courage to risk his disapproval or rejection if he reacted to my deep feelings. Actually, by the time I did share my feelings with him, I was determined to be known regardless the cost.

4. Problem solving skills to address the situation with your partner for a win-win outcome.

Sometimes when you change a behavior in a relationship it is confusing to your partner. Through couples counseling you can learn new ways of relating to each other that work better for both of you. Helping your partner to thrive will improve your satisfaction in the relationship.

My husband and I learned to resolve differences with help. I learned to take care of my social needs and he learned to allow space for others to tell their stories too. My husband?s determination to find a win-win solution helped us grow closer together.

Always remember relationships are messy ? there is no way around that fact. Negotiating the intimate details of our lives is risky. Every person has gut feelings. Working through these feelings is what makes for a healthy marriage or couple-ship.

U.S. Firm Applying for a Trademark in Thailand : Thailand Law

While your U.S. trademark may be recognized in Thailand, little if any protection is available. However, U.S. companies are eligible to register their trademarks in Thailand. To be eligible the business or its agent, which may be a local attorney, must have an address in Thailand. Although talks are underway, Thailand is not yet part of the Madrid System for International Trademark protection, so you will have to apply for trademark protection in Thailand in a separate process. In addition, Thailand is a civil law jurisdiction and does not recognize common law trademarks. While your U.S. trademark may be recognized in Thailand, little if any protection is availabe.

Thailand recognizes many of the same types of marks that are recognized in the U.S., including ?trademarks, collective marks, certification marks, and service marks. Thailand also uses the International Classification for Goods and Services, with which you may be familiar. Only brands, names, words, letters, photographs, drawings, devices, manuals, signatures, combinations of colors, shapes, configuration of an object or any combination thereof can be trademarked in Thailand. Unlike the U.S. single colors cannot be trademarked. Trademark registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely for subsequent periods of 10 years.

Trademark Search

Before applying for trademark registration, you should complete a trademark search to see if any similar marks have been registered in Thailand and make the registration process more predictable.

Submit Application

Although your trademark can include English words, the application and all documentation must be submitted in Thai. When you submit your application you will need to indicate which classes of goods and services you want to register for. Like in the U.S. you can submit your application before you start using your trademark and provide proof of use later.

Evaluation by the Trademark Registrar

The Trademark Registrar will determine whether your mark is distinctive and if it is identical or confusingly similar to existing marks. The Thailand Trademark Act of 2000 prohibits certain types of marks, including certain geographical names, marks that are immoral or resemble Thai national or royal emblems, names or representations. Trademarks pending approval are published in the Trademark Journal.

If there are objections to your trademark you may submit amendments, additional statements and supporting documents within 90 days of the objection.

When your application is approved you will receive certificates of trademark registration for the classes in which you applied. To protect your mark, it is advisable to monitor the Trademark Journal for potential infringing trademark applications.

Register any Trademark Licensing Agreements

After your trademark is registered, you must also register any licensing agreements for your trademark. To register the licensing agreement you and your licensee will provide the agreed upon terms of the license agreement and proof of valid trademark registration.

Renew your Trademark

To keep your trademark, you need to submit your original certificates of registration with an application of renewal 90 days before your registration expires. Proof of use is not normally required.

States, cities look for ways to prepare transportation systems for new rounds of wild weather

WASHINGTON - Wild weather is taking a toll on roads, airports, railways and transit systems across the country.

That's leaving states and cities searching for ways to brace for more catastrophes like Superstorm Sandy that are straining the nation's transportation lifelines beyond what their builders imagined.

Despite their concerns about intense rain, historic floods and record heat waves, some transportation planners find it too politically sensitive to say aloud a source of their weather worries: climate change.

Political differences are on the minds of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, whose advice on the design and maintenance of roads and bridges is closely followed by states. The association recently changed the name of its Climate Change Steering Committee to the less controversial Sustainable Transportation, Energy Infrastructure and Climate Solutions Steering Committee.

Still, there is a recognition that the association's guidance will need to be updated to reflect the new realities of global warming.

"There is a whole series of standards that are going to have to be revisited in light of the change in climate that is coming at us," said John Horsley, the association's executive director.

In the latest and most severe example, Superstorm Sandy inflicted the worst damage to the New York subway system in its 108-year history, halted Amtrak and commuter train service to the city for days, and forced cancellation of thousands of airline flights at airports in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

In Washington state, "we joked we were having 100-year storms every year," said Paula Hammond, head of the state's Department of Transportation.

Last year flooding threatened to swallow up the Omaha, Neb., airport, which sits on a bend in the Missouri River. The ground beneath the airfield became saturated, causing about 100 sinkholes and "soil boils" ? uplifted areas of earth where water bubbles to the surface. The airport was spared through a massive effort that included installing 70 dewatering wells and stacking sandbags around airport equipment and buildings.

Record-smashing heat from Colorado to Virginia last summer caused train tracks to bend and highway pavement to buckle. A US Airways jet was delayed at Washington's Reagan National Airport after its wheels got stuck in a soft spot in the tarmac.

Dallas had more than five weeks of consecutive 100 degree-plus high temperatures. "That puts stress on pavements that previously we didn't see," Horsley said.

States and cities are trying to come to terms with what the change means to them and how they can prepare for it. Transportation engineers build highways and bridges to last 50 or even 100 years. Now they are reconsidering how to do that, or even whether they can, with so much uncertainty.

No single weather event, even a storm like Sandy, can be ascribed with certainty to climate change, according to scientists. But the increasing severity of extreme events fits with the kind of changing climate conditions that scientists have observed.

For example, several climate scientists say sea level along New York and much of the Northeast is about a foot higher than a century ago, mostly because of man-made global warming, and that added significantly to the damage when Sandy hit.

Making transportation infrastructure more resilient will be expensive, and the bill would come at a particularly difficult time. Aging highways, bridges, trains and buses already are in need of repair or replacement and no longer can handle peak traffic demands. More than 140,000 bridges are structurally deficient or obsolete. The problem only will worsen as the U.S. population grows.

A congressional commission estimated that all levels of government together are spending $138 billion a year less than is needed to maintain the current system and to make modest improvements.

"The infrastructure of the nation is aging and it's at risk because, quite frankly, we're all not investing enough to take care of these facilities," said Hammond, the chairwoman of the climate committee. "And now we're facing extreme weather threats that cause us to need emergency response capabilities beyond what we've had in the past."

In Washington state, "we have seen more erratic weather patterns that we haven't had before, so we really can't imagine what kind of winter or summer we're going to have anymore," Hammond said.

More frequent heavy rainfalls in the western half of the state have increased the volume and velocity of water in rivers and streams, undermining the foundations of bridges. Rising sea levels are eroding coastal roads. In the drier eastern half of the state, more frequent wildfires have forced road maintenance crews to change their methods in an effort to prevent sparks that might cause a blaze.

"Each time you replace a bridge, states have to be thinking about not just what kind of traffic demand there is, but how do I make sure this is a bridge that will withstand the future given the erratic weather patterns and climate change we're seeing," Hammond said. "It's a new layer of analysis."

About half the states have taken some steps toward assessing their most critical vulnerabilities, experts said. But few have gone to the next step of making preparations. New York was an exception. Not only had transit officials made detailed assessments of the potential effects of climate change, but they'd started to put protections in place. Subway entrances and ventilation grates were raised in low-lying areas to reduce flooding, but that effort was overwhelmed by Sandy.

"They got hit with what was even worse than even their worst-case scenario," said Deron Lovaas, a transportation expert with the Natural Resources Defence Council, an environmental group. "This was an active test of ... climate preparedness, and they failed."

While more than 97 per cent of the scientists who publish peer-reviewed research say that global warming is real and man-made, the issue remains highly charged. In conservative states, the term "climate change" is often associated with left-leaning politics.

Planning for weather extremes is hampered by reluctance among many officials to discuss anything labeled "climate change," Horsley said.

"In the Northeast, you can call it climate change. ... That's an acceptable term in that region of the country," he said. "Elsewhere, in the South and the (Mountain) West, it's still not an acceptable term because of ideology or whatever you want to call it."

For example, Horsley said, in North Dakota, where there has been severe flooding in recent years, state officials avoid bringing up global warming, preferring to couch their discussions on how to shore up infrastructure as flood preparation.

The Obama administration has also shied away from talking publicly about adaptation to climate change. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's office refused to allow any department officials to be interviewed by The Associated Press about the agency's efforts to help states adapt. The Transportation Department and other federal agencies are involved in preparing a national assessment of climate change impacts and adaptations that may be needed. Their report is expected to be finished in the next few months.

Steve Winkelman, director of transportation and adaptation programs at the Center for Clean Air Policy, said he uses terms like "hazard mitigation" and "emergency preparedness" rather than climate change when talking to state and local officials.

"This is about my basement flooding, not the polar bear ? what I call inconvenient sewer overflow," Winkelman said. "It makes it real."
